Who’s To Blame? Trucker Got Ticket

State Police video

WINDSOR LOCKS, CT – Riding on a divided highway is supposed to be safer than riding anywhere else. No one can pull out from a side street and an oncoming vehicle can’t drift across the center line. That doesn’t mean accidents can’t happen – as a Connecticut state trooper discovered on Wednesday afternoon.

From the dashcam video posted by CSP on YouTube and Facebook, it appears two motorcyclists were attempting to pull into the center lane on I-91 south of Exit 42 to allow the cruiser to pass when a trucker in the right lane decided to shift into the center lane at the same time.

The trooper swerved to avoid the motorcyclist, struck the concrete center barrier and then hit the tractor-trailer. The trucker was ticketed for an unsafe lane change.

CSP posted the video as a reminder of the importance of “situational awareness.”

“We say over and over again to be aware of your surroundings and to remain alert, this is why,” the post stated. “Whether you’re the one making the lane change or if you’re simply driving down the road, expect the unexpected. Know what’s around you. If a vehicle suddenly comes into your lane where can you go? Do you have an opening on your side to go to? Is there somebody behind you? Are you in a construction pattern? You should constantly be re-evaluating and planning for the unexpected.”
