Up until yesterday, I’d never heard of FairWarning.com, a non-profit, online investigative news operation devoted to “news of safety, health and corporate conduct” that’s headed by award-winning former “Los Angeles Times” investigative reporter Myron Levin. What brought it to my attention was a story headlined “Despite Death Toll, Motorcycle Groups Strive to Muzzle U.S. Regulators”and which told of the rising death rate among riders as more and more states repeal helmet laws.
I read the lengthy story (and you can, too, here) and promptly moved on – until an email arrived later in the day that contained the reaction of the Motorcycle Riders Foundation vice president Jeff Hennie, who labeled the story “bogus.”
To riders who support “freedom of choice,” the helmet issue is an inflammatory one and one that generates an automatic and loud response. Combine the yowling with the amount of money spent on lobbying state and federal legislators to support “freedom of choice” and it’s easy to see why helmet laws are falling by the wayside.
