SALISBURY, CT – There were only a smattering of motorcycles among the more than 200 cars entered in Lime Rock Park’s Historic Festival 33, the track’s Sunday in the Park Concours d’Elegance, but the ones that were entered were exquisite.
A 1937 BMW R6 (in foreground below) owned by Philip Richter of Ridgefield, CT won the trophy in the “Up on Two Wheels” category.
Taking home the big prize as “Best of Show” was “Count Trossa,” a custom-bodied 1930 Mercedes-Benz SSK owned by Ralph Lauren.
“The Trossi SSK is truly a work of art,” said Festival organizer Murray Smith in a press release issued by the track. “This car is so rarely in public, I can’t thank Ralph enough for entering it in our concours for everyone to enjoy.”
Lauren’s SSK previously won Best of Show at the 1993 Pebble Beach concours and Italy’s Villa d’Este concours in 2007.
A display of motorcycles from Team Obsolete, the vintage road race organization from Brooklyn, NY, attracted many visitors on the sun-drenched day.
So did machines displayed by individuals. Roland Houde of Andover, MA brought his 1947 Harley-Davidson WR factory racer.
Houde recalled the bike’s history:
Houde also started the WR for spectators:
Keeping a watchful eye on the festival was Lime Rock Park owner Skip Barber.
Here are a few more pictures from the concours.
