Motorcycle-riding Macaw Seriously Ill – R.I.P. Kaiba

Updated – Sept. 10, 2024 – News today from owner Thea Everest that Kaiba has passed away. A necropsy is planned to possibly determine what caused the abscess that claimed him. As of today, a GoFundMe effort started by Everest to help cover doctors’ bills has raised $600 of a $3,500 goal.

TORRINGTON, CT – Kaiba, the motorcycle-riding blue and gold macaw, is suddenly and seriously ill. Owner Thea Everest of Torrington, who often takes the bird along when riding her 2013 Honda Sabre, revealed Friday that Kaiba is under the care of veterinarians.

“Kaiba has an abscess on his liver. His entire gastrointestinal tract is enflamed from the gas the abscess is producing, it is unknown yet if it is cancer or bacteria. Trying meds first, if it doesn’t shrink, removing the access is the only option,” Everest wrote in a GoFundMe plea for financial support.

“The abscess along with the pocket of air and blood is the size of his head,” she added.

RIDE-CT recently wrote about Everest and Kaiba after spotting them riding into a downtown car show and recorded video of them riding together.

Everest provided some backstory on Kaiba’s illness. “He’s been sluggish, barely eating or drinking, and is severely anemic and lacking in proteins. He has somehow lost 100 grams in the past month and, with feathers, it was hard to tell,” she wrote.

“He’s had several X-rays and is receiving the best care he can from Kensington Bird and Animal Hospital with the assistance of Piper Memorial (Veterinary Center in Middletown).”

Everest has set a fundraising goal of $3,500 as “pet insurance won’t cover most of this.” Donations will go to tests, medications, hospitalization and related costs. As of Saturday morning, $300 had been pledged.
