Honda nudged out Harley-Davidson to become the best selling motorcycle brand in the United States in 2024, according to recent data released from Statistica.
The Japanese brand held a 20 percent market share, based on unit sales, compared to a 19.9 percent share for American brand Harley-Davidson.
Three other Japanese brands rounded out the Top 5 manufacturers. Yamaha had a 12.2 percent share, followed by Kawasaki with an 11.6 percent share and Suzuki with a 5.2 percent share. A whopping 49 percent of the motorcycles sold in the U.S. came from Japanese manufacturers.
BMW held a 3.1 percent share with other brands claiming a 28.1 percent share.
Separate statistics from Motorcycles Data released in November showed motorcycle sales in the U.S. to be flat for the first nine months of 2024 at 462,641, with annual sales over the past decade being roughly a half-million units.
Worldwide, the U.S. isn’t much of a factor when it comes to motorcycle sales or production.
Of the Top 10 manufacturers around the globe, three are from Japan, three are from India and four are from China, according to Motorcycles Data.
Not only is Honda the leader in the U.S., it is the worldwide leader as well with sales of 14.9 million models. India’s Hero Motor comes in second, followed by Yamaha from Japan, Yadea from China and TVS Motor from India.
Rounding out the Top 10 makers are Baja Auto (India), Haojue (China), Suzuki (Japan), Loncin (China), and Zongshen (China).
