It’s Thanksgiving! It’s a holiday to share with family and friends. Time permitting, it’s also a time to pause and give thanks. This holiday, among many things, I’m thankful for the friends that I frequently ride with and the many riders that I meet along the way.
While I’ve lost track of the miles covered this year, I haven’t lost track of the memories created, including the day back in spring when Brian O’Neill took me by the church in Great Barrington, MA that Arlo Gurthrie made famous in his “Alice’s Restaurant Massacre” musical monologue.
It has been 47 years since that Guthrie shared a Thanksgiving dinner with Alice and Ray Brock inside the church where the couple made their home. Yes, 47 years. Time does fly. Guthrie later bought the church and turned it into The Guthrie Center.
While I didn’t end up with “27 8×10 color glossy pictures” of the church that day, I did take a few shots to help keep the memory fresh. With listening to “Alice’s Restaurant” having become a Thanksgiving tradition for those of us of a certain age, it only appropriate that the song be recalled as RIDE-CT.com extends “Happy Thanksgiving!” wishes to everyone – especially to Guthrie for having given us “Alice’s Restaurant,” “The Motorcycle Song” and so many other great songs.
A live performance of “Alice’s Restaurant” performed by its creator at The Guthrie Center in 2005 can be found here.
