A mid-winter ritual for riders in the northeast is getting upended.
The just-released schedule for the 2013-2014 Progressive International Motorcycle Shows lists the dates for the next New York show as Dec. 13-15, rather than the event’s usual dates over the third weekend in January.
RIDE-CT.com has emailed event promoter Advanstar Communications to find out a reason for the switch, but hasn’t heard back. One likely possibility is to provide a shopping opportunity for holiday gifts.
However, the switch of the IMS’s New York stop at the Jacob K. Javits Convention Center to just before Christmas certainly makes the event less convenient to attend for those not living close to the city. It’s also less attractive from a mental standpoint as it has traditionally provided riders with a mid-winter break from the bad weather.
In a sense, the IMS was something like Ground Hog Day. Once you made it to the IMS, you knew you could make it to the next riding season. The third weekend in January slot for the IMS has now been awarded to Phoenix. The full schedule may be found here.
Feel free to comment on the switch of the New York dates…

Yamaha is recalled some 3,900 of its new Bolt model that were manufactured between March and June for a problem with the wiring harness.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration says “slack or sag in the wiring harness may allow it to contact the exhaust manifold causing wires to melt, and possibly short circuit.”
This could case the engine to stall, the NHTSA reports. The recall is expected to begin at month’s end. The recall notice is posted here.
