What comes after Turkey Day? How about Duck Day?
Earlier this week, friend and reader Bob Rosen sent along a picture that he took recently while on a ride to eastern Long Island. It was of the Big Duck, an example of what he explained is “novelty architecture.”
Rosen says the duck is roughly 30 feet long and 20 feet tall, with a wooden frame that is covered with mesh and concrete. Headlights from a Ford Model T are used for the eyes. The duck is a tourist attraction and gift shop maintained by Suffolk County, and is even listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
The duck can be found in Flanders, NY, just east of Riverhead on Route 24. Obviously, it’s all that it’s quacked up to be.
