MINNEAPOLIS – Anyone with a savvy knowledge of Indian motorcycles – or “motocycles” as they were originally known – will be thrilled to learn that some old-time names are being dusted off and revived. In announcing five Scout versions for the 2025 model year on Tuesday, Indian revealed that the “101 Scout” and “Sport Scout” name tags have been brought back from obscurity. It’s about time.
The original 101 Scout, made by the original Indian company that began in Springfield, MA in 1901, was a model that was only built for four years, 1928-1931. It was a well-handling motorcycle favored by racers of the era. The moniker is now being applied to a 101 Scout model described as “the highest performing Scout Indian Motorcycle has ever offered,” according to Indian.
The original Sport Scout lasted a bit longer – from 1934 through 1942. It, too, was used for racing. The new Sport Scout is “inspired by history but redesigned for the style of today,” and “gives a more aggressive spirit to the Scout lineup,” Indian said.
The original Indian went out of business in 1953. The current Indian, owned by Polaris, began producing motorcycles in 2011.
The 101 Scout and the Sport Scout are joined by the Scout Bobber, Scout Classic and Super Scout in giving Indian customers a variety of choices, and giving the brand a sportier look. Each of the models will be available in three trim levels. All Scout models will be powered by a new 1,250cc V-twin engine that delivers up to 111 horsepower. Also fresh is a new steel tube frame and redesigned tins.
Indian unveiled its Scout line in late 2014 as a 2015 model so a makeover was due, if not overdue, although the styling changes are more evolutionary than revolutionary.
“Our top priority was to uphold the iconic namesake of Scout and ensure the new lineup is as timeless as all its predecessors,” said Ola Stenegard, Indian’s director of product design, in a press release announcing the new Scouts.
“For us, it was imperative to keep it clean, follow the iconic lines of Scout, and create a package that offered seamless customization. To achieve this, it all started with the steel tube frame and all-new, V-Twin engine.”
The new Scouts, which will arrive in dealer showrooms beginning in May, will be available at a variety of price points. The Scout Bobber starts at $12,999, the Sport Scout at $13,499, the Scout Classic at $13,999, the Super Scout at $16,999 and the 101 Scout at $16,999.
