The cost of buying a new Indian just got a lot cheaper. In an unveiling at the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally late last night, the company surprised with a new, smaller Scout model for 2015. It will have a base MSRP of only $10,999 – thousands less than the existing models, which start at $18,999.
The Scout weighs in at only 558 pounds and is propelled by a newly-designed, 69-cubic-inch V-twin engine that boasts 100 horsepower. It has a drive-by-wire throttle and a six-speed transmission.
The original Indian built a motorcycle with the Scout name between 1920 and 1949, the most appealing version being the 101 Scout that was made between 1928 and 1931. Like its predecessors, the new Scout features a solo seat with low seat height (25.3 inches), a lower center of gravity and the “rigid triangle” look of a classic model.
“Over the course of 30 years of countless innovations, racing wins, world records and industry firsts, the Scout has earned its reputation as a versatile, multifaceted bike that appeals to just about every rider and every riding style, with superior handling, balance, performance and craftsmanship,” said Steve Menneto, vice president of motorcycles for Indian owner Polaris Industries. “Our designers and engineers have taken that heritage and those characteristics and fused it into the 2015 Indian Scout, and we think just about everyone who rides this incredible bike is going to feel like it was built just for them.”
The Scout will be available in dealership in late fall, but Indian is taking orders now. It will be available in red, black, silver matte and black matte.
