Just Another Year of Riding for Jay Koonz

By Bud Wilkinson of RIDE-CT.com

The Facebook post by Jay Koonz on New Year’s Day could have easily been interpreted as braggadocio by someone who doesn’t know him. Those who do know the Middlebury rider, though, no doubt took it as matter-of-fact record-keeping. He noted that his goal for 2012 was to visit 100 covered bridges and put at least 1,000 miles on his BMW every month.

Suffice to say, Koonz met his goals. He made it to 109 covered bridges in Connecticut, New York, Massachusetts and Vermont, and logged a total of 20,832 miles. He rode on 204 days in 2012 and his monthly totals ranged from 1,019 to 2,536. miles.

Koonz started riding in 1970 when he got a Honda CB350. In 1984, he took a BMW R80GS to Alaska and back, by way of California, and covered 10,192 miles, so his 2012 stats really aren’t that remarkable. He hasn’t said yet what his goals are for 2013.

Yankee Beemers will have a (post-holidays) Holiday Party at Lake Pearl in Wrentham, MA on Jan. 12. Details are here.
