Max BMW Building “New” Bike From Parts

1-Max BMW parts

There are winter projects and then there’s the one being attempted by Max BMW.

Techs from Max BMW’s three locations have come together at the store in North Hampton, NH to build a BMW R90S from scratch using new parts ordered directly from the company. More than a year’s worth of prep has gone into the project.

The build is using a 1975 R90S as the template and the actual job is expected to take four Max BMW bike framedays. Work began yesterday and there’s a live video feed here during assembly hours. There are also Facebook updates here.

A post yesterday says a video of the project will be available once it’s done; the purpose of the project being “to showcase all the original BMW parts that are still available for classic bikes and to give people a chance to see our shop and watch our techs build a brand new classic.”

Knowing what parts for any bike cost, I shudder to think what the price tag for building a new bike like this might be – even getting the parts wholesale. Who knows … maybe Max BMW will find a demand for “new/old” bikes like this. I’d certainly love to find an untouched R90S for sale.

Given the popularity of old Beemers, maybe BMW should do a limited run of an old model every year. I’m sure there’d be takers for it.

– Helmet use in Michigan fell by roughly 25 percent following the repeal of that state’s helmet law. A new survey finds that 73 percent of motorcyclists wore helmets in 2012, down from 99.4 percent a year earlier when a helmet law was in effect. The number of motorcycle deaths involving unhelmeted riders rose from five in 2012 to 55 in 2012, while the number of seriously injured riders who were not wearing helmets increased from 24 in 2011 to 195 in 2012.

– A rider and his passenger, neither of whom were wearing helmets, died on Saturday night in an accident in Perth, Australia. The motorcycle was unregistered and not roadworthy, police said. It didn’t have a headlight, and the motorcyclist was apparently riding with a flashlight in his mouth. ABC News has the story with video here.

Vespa-Segway-(Disenada-y-Montada-a-mano-En-EspanaFinally, if you’re looking for a unique Christmas gift, a company in Spain has crafted a vehicle that will certainly grab attention. It’s a mix between a Segway and a Vespa.

The website that’s offering it for sale says it was designed and handmade in Spain. The price is 2,899 Euros.

As best as I can translate, the modified Segway is built with original parts from Piaggio and is guaranteed for five years.

A website called Maxihobby has it here.
