An investigation of two recent fires involving a Can-Am Spyder has been launched by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. The Office of Defects Investigation probe covers some 52,000 of the reverse trikes from the 2008 to 2014 model years. The investigation was opened on Monday but just revealed today.
The NHTSA says “these recent fires appear to be unrelated to the issues covered by the previously released safety recalls” involving Spyders.
The first fire involved a 2011 Spyder RT used as a traffic enforcement vehicle by the police department in Morgantown, WV. It happened on July 20. The second, involving a 2013 Spyder RT, occurred in California’s Mojave Desert on July 26.
The safety agency is looking into what caused the fires. A recall could be the result of the investigation. Over the past 19 months, Can-Am owner BRP “has conducted three safety recalls (on Spyders) to address defects that could result in a fire on the subject vehicles,” the NHTSA reported.
