Out of Gas … But Worth It to See GS1000E

By Bud Wilkinson of RIDE-CT.com

It’s possible to outsmart oneself. Like this afternoon. Planned to meet a friend for lunch at 2 p.m. at Toymaker’s Cafe in Falls Village. Because I had time to kill while riding out Route 44 to Canaan, I decided to bolt up Route 7 and get some cheaper petrol in Massachusetts. Instead of stopping at the pump upon hitting Sheffield as planned, though, I decided to continue on to Guido’s in Great Barrington and pick up some items for dinner. Part-way there, I saw a red vintage bike turn down the lane to the covered bridge in Sheffield, so I did a u-turn to investigate.

Parked in front of the bridge was Mark Walsh’s 1983 Suzuki GS1100E. Mark’s from Winsted. He was joined by Carla Majuntke, who lives in Suffied but who hails from Germany (and has the accent to prove it). They were out enjoying what was a gorgeous afternoon.

After chatting for a few minutes, we went out separate ways. I headed back toward downtown Sheffield to get gas – but ran out a half-mile before the station. Fortunately, the road’s flat in that area so pushing my bike to the gas pump wasn’t hard, although it made me late for lunch. It was worth it to meet Mark and Carla and to see the old Suzuki.
