TORRINGTON, CT – A former Litchfield, CT resident who was serving a nine-year sentence at the York Correctional Institution for an accident in 2016 in which she plowed into a group of motorcyclists, killing a passenger on one bike and injuring others, has died.
Elizabeth Waterbury, 65, was being held at the state’s women’s prison in Niantic. She died Feb. 2 at Lawrence + Memorial Hospital in New London where she had been taken after suffering an undisclosed medical issue, according to a report today in the “Republican-American” newspaper.
Waterbury was expected to be released from prison on March 31. Her scheduled five-year probation following her release was terminated in Superior Court on Friday and her case was closed.

The accident occurred on Route 63 north of the green in Litchfield on Oct. 23, 2016. A group of motorcyclists were enjoying a fall foliage ride when Waterbury, driving a 2014 Ford Escape, she veered into the oncoming lane and slammed into the pack of 18 riders.
Waterbury pleaded guilty to second-degree manslaughter for the death of 33-year-old Aislinn Kern of Harwinton, CT, assault with a motor vehicle and operating under the influence. Four others were injured.
State police determined that Waterbury had an alcohol level above the legal limit as well as prescription drugs in her system. She also hid alcohol containers after crashing. Police said she also had two prior DUI arrests.
