In an editorial posted online on Wednesday afternoon, Hearst Communications’ newspapers in Connecticut -including “The News-Times” in Danbury, “The Advocate” in
Stamford, the “Greenwich Time” and the “Connecticut Post” in Bridgeport – came out in favor of the state renewing a requirement that all motorcyclists wear a helmet when riding.
Noting “a recent string of tragic motorcycle crashes” that resulted in four deaths, the editorial said “such a dramatic human toll is shocking and saddening” and urged the state legislature to “address this serious life-and-death issue and take the appropriate action.”
While acknowledging the argument of helmet-law opponents who maintain that wearing a helmet should be the individual rider’s choice, the editorial stated, “It is simple common sense that a motorcyclist is much safer wearing a helmet than riding without one, and that his whole network of loved ones and associates is better off, too.”
