HADDAM NECK – The 35th annual Brit Jam meet scheduled for Sunday, Aug. 16 at the Haddam Neck Fairgrounds has been called off due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
The decision to scrap the popular gathering which attracted more than 2,500 motorcyclists in 2019 wasn’t made by the organizer, the British Iron Association of Connecticut, rather was forced on the club by the Haddam Neck Fair Association.
In announcing its decision on May 20 to cancel the 2020 Haddam Neck Fair, the association also elected to dispense with all other scheduled events at the fairgrounds, making Brit Jam a victim.
In a message posted on its website, the British Iron Association of Connecticut said that “with regret,” it “supports their decision in order to keep our supporters safe and healthy.”
The club is already look ahead to staging Brit Jam in 2021.
“The British Iron Association of Connecticut and the Haddam Neck Fair Association will continue working in unison and supporting each other for Brit Jam 2021 and future shows as well,” the club’s message said.
“At this time, our sympathies are with all those affected in America, and all around the world.”
Still no word on the fate another meet that’s usually held the same day as Brit Jam – the Split’n Lanes Dodgin’ Gutters show held at the Brooklyn Bowl bowling alley in Brooklyn.
It may ultimately be canceled as well, although organizer Girard Fox isn’t yet willing to pull the plug. In a Message exchange on Saturday, he wrote,”Venue still closed with no new info.” That suggests he’s holding out a glimmer of hope that it still may be staged.
