Closing on Horizon for Point Lookout Mountain Inn

By Bud Wilkinson of RIDE-CT.com

The view is simply spectacular. From the deck of the Point Lookout Mountain Inn on Route 23 in East Windham, NY, it’s possible to see five states. RIDE-CT.com spent Columbus Day on Monday riding back roads throughout the Catskills and stopped at the inn for lunch – only to learn from owner Ron Landstrom that this weekend  may be the inn’s last in business.Rising fuel prices and an economy that still hasn’t recovered has forced the inn into bankruptcy. Foreclosure is imminent, although Landstrom and his wife, Laurie, are scrambling to find an injection of cash. The Lindstroms have owned the inn since 2001. It sits 1,900 feet above sea level and offers, as the top picture taken from the inn’s outdoor deck shows, a spectacular view.

My guess is that the inn’s closing will bring sadness to many Hudson Valley motorcyclists as well as to riders in New England. Hearing the news was the lone down note on an otherwise exhilarating day of riding. The foliage was near its peak and the number of leaf-peepers was minimal.

Meanwhile, RIDE-CT.com’s Steve Smith reports that Route 86 in Duchess County, NY has recently been top-dressed with gravel, making the riding treacherous.

  1. Hi Mary,

Don’t despair! The Inn will be reopening very shortly! The new owner, Wayne Hamilton, has already completed the room renovations and is in the process of completely redoing the kitchen.

Its been amazing to see how many people feel a deep and lasting connection to the Inn! We look forward to you visiting and hope you will share your memories!

    All the best.

  2. Are you the original Point Lookout? I have a picture from 1946 with this fantastic building, and my newlywed parents and grandfather in the foreground. My grandparents stayed alot at a place called Hanaks Farm in Kiskatom. Are you really closing? We would visit in a minute!! I am trying to piece lives together with pictures; it is wonderful to find a connection that still exists…I hope???
    Thanks-
