NASHUA, NH – A trove of old motorcycles, primarily Triumph models, along with parts and tools will be up for auction Friday when J. Wood & Company dispenses with the inventory of Gate City Cycle Center. The shop’s owner, Jerald “Dude” Wheeler, died in September.
“We’re going to start with the motorcycles,” auctioneer Jerry Wood said this morning in a quick phone chat as he prepared for the auction. That is, after first selling maybe 10 items of memorabilia. After the bikes, the parts and tools will be presented.
“I have a brand new Triumph (X-75) Hurricane that Dude built from new old stock,” Wood said, along with “probably a dozen museum quality bikes” as well as “just plain old riders and bikes that need work.”
The auction is being held at Gate City Cycle Center, 820 West Hollis St. Items are available for inspection today until 5 p.m and beginning again at 8 a.m. Friday. The auction will commence at 10 a.m. Friday with both in-person and online bidding.
The auction was originally scheduled for May but got postponed because of the COVID-19 pandemic.
In addition to the dozens of motorcycles, including some pristine Japanese models, Wood said there are “mountains and mountains” of parts and tools, including some sold by Snap-On.
Gate City Cycle Center was founded in 1959 by Harold Bishop and was a Triumph dealership. Bishop sold the business to Wheeler, whose was 77 when he passed away. His obituary noted his “passion for vintage British motorcycles.”
J. Wood & Company’s website describes Wheeler’s collection as “a walk back in time for Triumph owners and collectors.” Among the parts are “rows and rows of new parts, NOS inventory.”
The website proclaims, “Here is a chance to get enough Triumph parts and tools to start your own shop, enhance your current collection, or just purchase the bike you have always wanted to own.”
All items will be sold with no reserve to the highest bidder.
