For the 2015 model year, Honda is celebrating four decades of producing the Gold Wing with a 40th anniversary edition (shown above), but the announcement earlier this month of the commemorative model was quickly overshadowed by a recall of some 126,000 Gold Wings from the 2001-2010 and 2012 model years.
The reason for the recall is an issue with the rear brakes, which “may drag after the brakes are released,” according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. The NHTSA says a “remedy for this issue has not been determined.” Owners are being instructed how to inspect their Gold Wings and will be notified when a remedy is found.
The NHTSA said, “A rear brake that drags may increase the risk of a vehcile crash. Additionally, extended riding with the rear brake dragging could generate enough heat to result in a fire.”
Meanwhile, the 40th edition Gold Wing is due in dealerships next month. It will come in two-tone candy red and black, silver metallic, and black with four performance package options. The starting MSRP is $23,999. The recall notice is posted here.
