If you wear an SA-08 model motorcycle helmet, sold under the brand name 5X5, you might want to chuck it in the dumpster. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has flagged it for failing to meet head protection requirements of the federal safety standard for helmets.
The NHTSA doesn’t believe than any of the of 5X5 helmets are currently being sold, but reported that as many as 14,000 were imported and sold by the now bankrupt California company Tank Sports, Inc. – and many of those may still be in use. In safety tests by the NHTSA, three out of four of the 5X5 helmets were penetrated. Test results can be read here.
