Oil Drippings: News and Opinion

By Bud Wilkinson of RIDE-CT.com

Massachusetts residents who live in the Berkshires or the Pioneer Valley in the western and central portions of the state are more apt to own a motorcycle than those living in more heavily populated areas, such as Boston. Using census figures, the state Department of Revenue has put out a map and list showing the number of motorcycles per 1,000 residents in each town. Boston.com has it posted here.

Which company has the longest history of making motorcycle? It’s a question that most of us have probably never pondered, but Brighton, England native Ricky McDonnell provided me with an answer upon meeting him on Wednesday afternoon at Kent Road Motor Sports in Cornwall Bridge. The correct answer is Triumph. Why? According to McDonnell, the brand dates back to when Moses received the Ten Commandments from God on Mount Sinai and “the roar of his Triumph could be heard throughout the land.”

Is it too cheeky to add that the roar was later drowned out by the sounds of Harley exhausts?

RIDE-CT.com had the second-most visitors in its history yesterday. Thanks for stopping!

A few months ago, reader Jerry Miller sent me a link via a Facebook post of a video  showing a custom motorcycle that uses a V10 motor from a Dodge Viper. I don’t recall posting it at the time, so I will now because it’s worth a look-see. Here’s an invitation to check out the Facebook page (www.facebook.com/ridect). By the way, the bike in the video was crafted by Brit bike builder Allen Millyard.
