MILWAUKEE – If you visited Royal Enfield’s United States website during business hours today there was no mention of it, despite a new model announcement being made in the motorcycle maker’s home base of India. Even now, the website hasn’t been updated, but Royal Enfield did indeed unwrap a new “ADV crossover”/scrambler model called the Scram 411.
And it wasn’t until close to 5 p.m. (CDT) that the company’s U.S. office finally issued a press release, confirming the Scram 411’s debut.
The Scram 411 is based on Royal Enfield’s Himalayan adventure bike with a 411cc, 24.3 horsepower, single-cylinder engine. No word on what the price might be stateside. The Himalayan goes for $5,299. The model is due to arrive in the U.S. in late summer/early fall.
Royal Enfield says the Scram 411 “was created by mixing genuine adventurer capability with scrambler playfulness and accessibility.” The model has a slightly lower seat height (31.3 inches versus 31.5 inches for the Himalayan). It weighs slightly less (408 pounds without gas versus 439 pounds), too.
In India, the Scram 411 comes in seven color schemes. Whether that’s the case here isn’t known either as Royal Enfield says U.S. “colorsways will be announced in the coming months.” What is known is that the Scram 411 has a 19-inch spoked wheel up front (compared to a 21-inch wheel on the Himalayan) and a 17-inch wheel in rear. Both models have a four-gallon gas tank and both have ABS.
Stories touting the arrival of the Scram 411 have been popping up for months, so it wasn’t a surprise when Royal Enfield finally posted an arrival date recently and took the wrapper off today.
What was surprising in this era when manufacturers market their products around the globe (and where the internet makes connects the world) is that Royal Enfield attempted a regional unveiling for a worldwide model as it did today.
