THOMASTON, CT – The status of trail riding at Thomaston Dam in Thomaston, CT in 2025 suddenly appears uncertain following a Facebook post on Monday afternoon by the site managing U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. The post notes that “due to a federal hiring freeze” recreation areas in New England “will experience reduced hours, limited access to facilities, and significantly reduced services this summer.”
RIDE-CT is seeking more info and will pass it along when it’s received. The trail riding season at the dam normally runs from May 1 through mid-October.
The riding area on the west side of Naugatuck River has been used by off-road riders for 50 years and roughly 40,000 riders use the area annually. The full trail system comprises a 13-mile loop above the dam, with northbound riders operating on the west side of the abandoned Route 8 state roadway and southbound riders on the east side of the road.
