Winsted Loses A Landmark Motorcycle

By Bud Wilkinson of RIDE-CT.com

For eight years, it has sat atop the roof of the building in Winsted that formerly housed Canton Cycles. From street level, it looked to be a vintage BMW. On Tuesday afternoon, however, a couple of motorcycle enthusiasts went up on the roof and disassembled the bike.

The “culprits” were Greg Bidou of Falls Village and Carl Foster of Avon, who snatched the relic with the permission of the building’s owner. They had to take it apart first, and then bring the parts to the ground by rope.

The process took a couple of hours in the midday sun, which was longer than Canton Cycles owner Ralph DeLuco took to make the bike out of spare parts back in 2003.

Canton Cycles went out of business last fall. DeLuco now works as service manager for European brands at Gengras Motorcycles in East Hartford. Greg and Carl are thinking of reassembling the bike at Toymaker’s Cafe in Falls Village, which Greg and his wife Anne own.

The complete bike rustling story will appear in “The Republican-American” newspaper on Wednesday.
