Ice Racing Begins in Sturbridge

By Bud Wilkinson of RIDE-CT.com

Nearly 100 competitors and 200 spectators from southern New England kicked off another season of ice racing today at the Hamilton Rod and Gun Club in Sturbridge, Mass.

The weather was perfect – temps in the upper 20s and no wind. The crowd was enthusiastic. The competition spirited. Hot dogs, hamburgers and hot chocolate could be enjoyed beside the large fireplace in the clubhouse, too.

The race field included pros and amateurs, males and females, and adults and kids. The first heat involving pro racers did see the yellow caution flag come out when one rider high-sided, but every race in the first session was otherwise smooth.

Among the particpants was John Lutzen (#20) of Manchester, who spent the day limping around the pit area after getting smashed in the ankle when kick starting his Yamaha YZ450 to get it warmed up prior to the races.

The races continue next Sunday. Admission is $10 with participants paying $30 for each class they enter.

RIDE-CT will have more on Sunday’s kickoff event in “The Republican-American” on Saturday.
